The total prize money in 2012 is $16,600,000 over 27 tournaments in the U.S. and four countries in Latin America; the average purse is $614,814. The Tour plays one $1 million event in 2012- the season-ending Nationwide Tour Championship at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney (Dallas area), Texas. The Soboba Classic introduced the world to a bright new star when Jerod Turner tapped in for a 2 stroke victory, propelling him into the PGA TOUR Nationwide Tour's top 25 and virtually securing his PGA TOUR card for 2010. Jerod jumped from 150th on the money list to the 17th position, guaranteeing a spot in the year end Nationwide Tour Championship. The 133 position jump is believed to be the largest in the history of the tour and has the 34 year old Turner well within the projected money needed on the Nationwide Tour Official Money List to gain status on the PGA TOUR. The Golf Channel coverage also introduced The Country Club at Soboba Springs to some 80 million viewers across the country, showing everyone that Major Championship golf is alive and well in the Inland Empire! Local stars Rickie Fowler and Brendan Steele also competed and gave the large galleries plenty to cheer about. Fowler's 65 on Friday set a course record and had him primed for a weekend run, just one shot off of the 36 hole lead. He ended the week in a tie for 31st, and his first official money earned as a profes-sional! Steele, who called Soboba home during his High School golf career at local Hemet High, fared even better for the week finishing in a tie for 8th. Steele's finish has him very close to the top 60 on the money list and coveted entry into the season ending Nationwide Tour Championship. 3rd round leader Derek Lamely fired a course record smashing 62 on Saturday, but fell just short of capturing the winner's prize of $180,000. However, his $108,000 check moved him into 3rd position on the money list and helped se-cure very high status on the PGA TOUR in 2010. Li Nationwide Tour 1n1111.11111 The 2010 Soboba Golf Classic once again provided its champion with a one way ticket to the PGA TOUR. Steven Bowditch, having started the event in the 76th position on the official money listed, vaulted all the way to number 11 with his victory and the $180,000 winner's share of the 1 million dollar purse. The long hitting Bowditch used the shortest club in his bag to capture the second Soboba Golf Classic title needing only 96 putts to manage the difficult and fast greens at The Country Club at Soboba Springs. Those 96 putts were 1 shy of the Nationwide Tour record for fewest putts in a 72 hole event. Bowditch did manage to beat last year's winning score of -16 under par by 3 strokes, finishing the week at -19 under par 265 with rounds of 70, 64, 63, and 68. Bowditch's 3rd round score of 63 was not the lowest of the week as that honor went to Camilo Benedetti of Spain, who despite carding a bogey, fired a 3rd round score of 62 and tied the tournament course record at the country club. Benedetti went on to finish T-5th with 6 other players 6 shots off of the pace. Daniel Summerhays birdied the final hole to finish alone in 2nd. It was Sum-merhays' third 2nd place finish of the season, but the largest single tournament check of his career at $108,000. He moved up to 4th on the money list and could rest easy knowing he would be on the PGA TOUR the following year. Summerhays won the 2007 Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational but could not collect the 1st place check of $126,000 because he was still an amateur! 2010 Steven Bowditch 28 2012 SOBOBA GOLF CLASSIC sobobaclassic.net FAST FACTS The Nationwide Tour is owned and operated by the PGA TOUR. Twenty-five PGA TOUR cards for 2013 will be awarded at the end of the 2012 season. As the official proving ground of the PGA TOUR, two out of three PGA TOUR members played on the Nationwide Tour. There are 60 international members from 16 countries outside the U.S. on Tour in 2012. Ben Crane's win at the 2011 McGladrey Classic was the 320th PGA TOUR title by a former Nationwide Tour player. There were a record 32 alumni winners in 45 official events on the PGA TOUR in 2011 (vs. record 28 last year). Nationwide Tour players have won 14 major championships, and each of the four at least once, most recently Keegan Bradley at the 2011 PGA Champi-onship...and four PLAYERS Championships (David Duval, Craig Perks, Stephen Ames, Tim Clark). Six players who competed on the Nationwide Tour in 2010 won a total of seven titles on the PGA TOUR in 2011 - Keegan Bradley (two wins), Chris Kirk, Scott Stallings, Brendan Steele, Jhonattan Vegas and Gary Woodland - more than any other group in the Tour's 22-year history. A record 87 of the 125 players who qualified for the 2011 PGA TOUR Play-offs for the FedExCup are former Nationwide Tour members. A record 91 of the 145 contestants in the 2011 PLAYERS Championship also played the Nationwide Tour. Eleven Nationwide Tour alums competed in the 2011 Presidents Cup for ei-ther the U.S. or International teams (vs. nine in 2009). sobobaclassic.net 2012 SOBOBA GOLF CLASSIC 21 PAST CHAMPIONS The Soboba Golf Classic Presented By HUB International 22 2012 SOBOBA GOLF CLASSIC sobobaclassic.net sobobaclassic.net 2012 SOBOBA GOLF CLASSIC 27 HISTORY PAST CHAMPIONS 2011 Ted Potter Jr. Ted Potter Jr. had three excellent looks at eagle putt chances on the 18th hole to win the PGA TOUR Nationwide Tour Soboba Golf Classic. He managed 3 birdies but that was enough to pry the Championship Trophy away from Andres Gonzales and Miguel Angel Carballo. The sudden death playoff was the first in tournament history and made for some great golfing Theater! Potter used a steady stroke and his southpaw golf swing to master the fast sur-faces at The Country Club at Soboba Springs. Known for speedy conditions, the players were met with some of the fastest greens on the tour. Ted Potter Jr. had already secured enough money to ensure PGA TOUR Status in 2012 prior to his victory at Soboba, but the $135,000 winners share boosted his Nationwide Tour Money List earnings, allowing him to finish 2nd overall for the year. This meant a much higher status in the coming PGA TOUR season and a chance to play in more of the events. The humbled Potter was a gracious champion and offered quiet, if not silent grati-tude to those that witnessed the great performance, as well as the volunteers who worked so hard to conduct the event. The Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians are proud to have Ted as their 2011 Cham-pion and look forward to crowning the next great player to master their course, The Country Club at Soboba Springs, and their tournament, The Soboba Golf Classic! HUB International In April 2008, The Country Club at Soboba Springs opened the doors to their beautiful new clubhouse and three years of hard work on golf course renovations and clubhouse construction came to a close. The Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians were not finished making big news however, and later that year announced that the PGA TOUR was coming to town in the form of the Soboba Classic on the Nationwide Tour! October 1st, 2009 marked the first round of one of the largest events ever to come to the Inland Empire. Then a $1 Million purse, the Soboba Classic was a direct line to the PGA TOUR for the Inaugural Champion Jerod Turner. 2012 has now come and the event has grown in stature, still boasting the Nationwide Tour's third largest purse at $750,000, with the winner's share nearly a certain guarantee to launch a player's PGA TOUR Career in 2013. The biggest announcement since the inctption of the Soboba Golf Classic in 2008 came just a few weeks prior to this year's tournament as The Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians announced that HUB International would be joining their team as "Presenting Sponsor" of the great event. The announcement was the culmination of a very busy off season that saw the tournament schedule change from the full to the spring, leaving just under 6 months to produce the 2012 Classic April 2 - 8! This document is intended to enhance the knowledge and curiosity of clients on various factors related to our transcription costs. A client from San Francisco called us a couple of days ago wanting to know our charges for transcribing n :mutes of audio, on being told that it was $ 1 for a minute of audio, he countered this with an offer of 35 0 for a minute of audio and no more. The Audio: Transcription Ratio There are quite a few callers on knowing that we charge $ 1 for a minute of audio — counter — "hey that's $ 60 an hour, isn't that expensive and unrealistic", our reply obviously is to the contrary, given the fact that these charges are based on audio time count, it takes a professional transcriber 4 to 5 minutes to transcribe a minute of audi. and taking this as a basis, after paying $ 15 an hour to a skilled transcriber, the cost on labour alone cost 250 a minute. httn. //www tran seri nti nn sservi c,e.comlblo g/tra n seri nti on-cost-through -the-industrvs-nersn_.. 04/17/2012 Transcription Cost I Rates I Affordable Price I Transcription Services I Transcription servi... Page 2 of 5 Contract Labour As A Solution The general mark-up on services billed by ,csses is thrice the labour costs paid to contract labour which is based on billable hours of effort, this covers marketing and other overheads, plus the profit margins for the company. Assuming if we work on these lines, the contract rate we will be charged is $ 5 /hour, it should be borne in mind that freelancers do not have the luxury of guaranteed paychecks, and after having invested in equipment and software their anticipated ROI is 3 to 4 times the wages that are paid to full time employees, this compensates more or less for the time lost, when no work comes their way. The only viable solution thus would be to outsource the service from a country which has skilled labour, and which can be hired for $ 1.25 to $ 2.50 an hour on a full time basis. Hiring Full-Time Staff -The Resultant Costs The other viable solution available is to hire full time staff, and keeping costs at a bare minimum, the resultant cost is as follows : — Assuming that 2000 working hours are possible annually, the thumb rule is that iesses generally do not take the entire 2000 hours into account for working out the costs, a round-up of 1400 hours is the bottom line, and with an average 4 minutes of effort it will get us 21,000 audio minutes annually, costing $1 for every minute of audio transcribed. Analysizing Different Options Assuming that $ 2/hour is paid as labour cost for a full-time effort, every minute of audio transcribed will cost 013.32 @ $ 2/bra 0 3.3 X 4 minutes, and in comparision it will cost 0 33.32 if contract labour is hired @ $ 5/hr a 0 8.33/minute x 4 minutes. If full time staff is hired and an annual pay of $ 4000 is taken into account, 20,000 minutes will cost 200 a minute, under the cicumstances when you consider that a full time staffer is capable of 21,000 minutes of transcription effort annually, the disadvantage is that the productivity is dependent on a single source alone, and this maywill result in backlogs and turn-around-times may not be possible to maintain. Outsourced Labour Is The Only Viablility The option of hiring overseas labour is the only viability under the circumstances, this will maintain cost of $ 1/ minute, the other options will necessitate a price hike to possibily $ 1.50 a minute, there are other add-on costs for example take the case of payment processors such as Pay Pal which charges 4% to 6% on every transaction. The base charge of the company is 300, plus 2.9% of the transaction value, this adds 590 or 5.9% to a $ 10 transaction. This brings us to the logical conclusion that $ 1/minute is barely enough for us to make ends meet without compromising on the professional standards of our service. A 3-hour meeting with 10 to 15 speakers would take approximately 15 hours to transcribe verbatim. Our hourly rate is $40 per hour of transcription so the cost would be $600. Our standard turnaround time is within 5 business days. Rush service is available at a higher cost. Factors that could affect the time and therefore the cost include poor quality of recording, lots of background noise, heavy accents, etc. We would be pleased to work with you. Let me know if you have other questions. We are excited to bring you this event in the spring as opposed to the fall. Being to- ward the beginning of the tour allows us to follow key players for a longer time as they prove their worth at our tournament. The tribe has long shared a strong belief in community — gathering together socially in leisure, entertainment, and sport. We also strongly believe in creating opportuni- ties by which the community at large can benefit — to give back in ways that are both meaningful and far-reaching. The 2012 Soboba Golf Classic presented by HUB International is just one way we give back. Our Soboba Foundation has provided local schools, community events and nonprofit organizations with hundreds of thousands of dollars and tribal mem- ber involvement to accomplish their worthy goals. This tournament creates increased revenue for local vendors and allows area non- profits to benefit through its TICKETS FORE CHARITY program. Sponsors are treated like royalty with unparalleled opportunities to promote their business, com- pany or service. This premier event also provides national exposure for our beauti- ful and vital San Jacinto Valley community. We thank you for your support as we look forward to another successful tourna- ment sharing a wonderful sporting and family experience with all of you. Enjoy! We are delighted to return this PGA TOUR -sanc- tioned event to the San Jacinto area and The Country Club at Soboba Springs for the fourth year in row. L. Nationwide Tour With the move of the tournament from September to April, 156 Nationwide Tour players will find The Country Club at Soboba Springs layout in its best condition of the entire year and a very strong challenge. The Classic's winner's check for $135,000 is the second highest on Tour and will clearly have impact on "The 25" race. Last year left-hander Ted Potter, Jr. snared his second win of the year, which cemented his PGA TOUR card for the first time. The season -long quest for "The 25" available PGA TOUR cards for 2013 enters its fifth week at Soboba Springs. This year's quest will take 200+ Nationwide Tour players hailing from 17 countries to 27 venues throughout the United States and four cities in Latin America. As the official proving ground of the PGA TOUR, the Nationwide Tour continues to experience positive growth and to have impact globally. To date, alumni have racked up more than 325 PGA TOUR wins, including 14 majors and four PLAYERS Championships. The roster of alumni now starring on the PGA TOUR features the likes of Ernie Els, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Matt Kuchar, Jason Day, Keegan Bradley, and many others. In 2011, over $120 million dollars was generated for charity on all three Tours, mov- ing the PGA TOUR's cumulative contributions ever closer to the $2 billion mark dat- ing back to 1938, with the Nationwide Tour making steady contributions to the total since 1990. We thank the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians for their commitment to the Nation- wide Tour and the impact the tournament is having on San Jacinto area charities. We also wish to extend thanks to new presenting sponsor HUB, as well as the other tournament sponsors for the contributions, hospitality and support they have given the Soboba Golf Classic, and the tournament volunteer base for their countless hours of dedication. Enjoy the week and enjoy watching the future stars of the PGA TOUR. Sincerely, Timothy W. Its role as the Title Sponsor of this 2012 PGA TOUR event is more than monetary. The tribe is in- volved with all aspects of the Soboba Golf Classic presented by HUB International, working tirelessly to ensure that visitors of all ages have an enjoyable experience. A vital agricultural and settlement presence long before Europeans arrived, the tribe has turned into a major economic force in the region during the the past 15 years, thanks to the creation of Soboba Casino in 1995. The casino currently employs nearly 1,000 people and the community benefits greatly via increased revenue at local hotels, restaurants and retail out- lets. Nationwide Tour "Native Americans, by their nature, are a giving people. They've always been good custodians of the land and are good neighbors," said tribal information officer Mike Hiles. "The casino has really helped the tribe's economic vitality, which in turn greatly impacts the economics of the region." The first documented existence of Luisenos in the San Jacinto region came in the mid-17th century, and the first Spanish missions in the territory were established at San Juan Capis- trano in 1775 and San Luis Rey in 1798. Archaeological evidence suggests Native Americans occupied this part of Southern California more than 20,000 years ago. In 1883, a 5,000-acre reservation was established for the Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians, stretching across the southern slopes of the San Jacinto Mountains. For most of its first 120 years on the reservation, the tribe's main economic activity was agriculture —particularly toma- toes, squash and pumpkins grown on the fertile San Jacinto River plain. It would later expand into citrus, and members also sold sand and gravel culled from the river plain for use in con- struction. On January 11, Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Indian Affairs Larry Echo Hawk and other U.S. officials joined Soboba Tribal leaders at the Country Club at Soboba Springs for a cere- mony to celebrate the conclusion of a century -long U.S./Tribal water rights dispute. "This settlement demonstrates President Obama's commitment to settling longstanding Indian claims, but also shows the attention this administration lends to non -Indian stakeholders as well in order to move forward in creating jobs and stimulating economic development for all," said Echo Hawk. Thanks to the collaboration among the Tribe, the water districts and the federal government, Water is in play off the tee and on approach. Two good shots will leave a great birdie chance. hole 10 PAR 4 378 yards This short fun hole will also offer lots of birdie chances. A miss -hit offers little forgiveness with all that surrounds this green. the historic settlement is widely expected to have a lasting impact when it comes to a secure water supply and spurring economic development for Soboba and the neighboring communities. "The Tribe is elated that this long -running issue has finally been resolved and that it is clearly a win - win for all," said Soboba Tribal Council Chairman Scott Cozart. There are currently about 900 members of the tribe and approximately half live on the reservation, which includes a chapel and cemetery, tribal administration offices and departments, a preschool and K-12 Noli Indian School, a medical clinic, the Oaks Retreat and a sports complex. The government consists of five tribal members elected by the general membership. From a Luiseno language welcome (Miiyu) at the main entrance to various displays of the tribe's rich history and cultural arts, visitors and participants will be reminded of Soboba's long term contribution to the region throughout the duration of the tournament. As a Title Sponsor for the Soboba Golf Classic presented by HUB International, the tribe will have a strong on -site presence. At the end of the tournament, bird singers will perform traditional songs and dances and then award the champion a handmade ribbon shirt made by Luiseno artisans. 20% OFF ENIRE ABLE Good April 2nd to April 8th. Since the gravest threat to the citrus industry is the possibility At the September 14 Citrus Pest and Disease Prevention Committee (CPDPC) meeting, committee members voted to set the 2011112 assessment at $.07 per 40 pound carton, a decrease of $.02 per carton. When the citrus pest and dis- ease program was established that Huanglongbing (HLB), aka citrus greening, might become established in California, the Committee has focused the ma- the assessment was set at $.01 per 40 pound carton for the first year. In October 2010 the CPDPC set the assessment at $.09 per 40 pound carton. Funds generated by the assess- ment were to be spent on eradication and trapping activi- ties and outreach to homeown- ers in areas infested by the psyl- lid. Due to prudent planning jority of its efforts over the past year in detecting and treating ACP populations and in sampling both ACP and plant material for HLB (see story, pg. 3). Because the majority of the ACP detected so far have been in backyard citrus, it's essential to enlist homeowners in the fight against the psyllid. Accordingly, the Committee has funded an extensive outreach and educa- tion effort through the Citrus Research Board (CRB) (see story, pg 3). And last, the Committee has provided approximately $500,000 to aid the CRB in get- ting its Riverside laboratory up and running. The facility is now certified by USDA to analyze both plant and insect samples for HLB (see story, pg. 3); and effective management on the part of the committee, not all of the assessment funds were expended in 2011. This means there are funds available for carrying into the 2011/12 fiscal year, and it will be possible to maintain an aggressive program against the ACP while giving growers a break on the assess- ment. CPDPC Assessment Lowered for 2012 Chairmar) Nick Hill • observing a resider) tial pesticide treat- rnerit "Fighting an urban ACP population presents unique challenges to the citrus industry in California." 2012 CPDPC Board Members Don Barioni, Jr., Alternate at large, Niland Richard Bennett, Secretary/Treasurer, Exeter Steve Birdsall Public metiaber Dan Dreyer Exeter Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP) was first detected in Califor- nia in San Diego in August of 2008. Subsequently, heavy infestations of ACP were identified in backyard citrus in the Los Angeles basin. By the summer of 2011, all or parts of Imperial, Los Angeles, Or- ange, Riverside, San Bernar- dino, San Diego and Ventura counties had been placed under quarantine for the ACP. Unlike other areas of the world where ACP is known to occur, California's ACP infestations are concentrated in residential areas. Very few ACP have been detected in Bob Felts, Jr. Visalia John Gless Riverside Jim Gorden Lemon Cove Gus Gunderson Santa Paula J. Link Leavens Ventura Mark McBroom Calipatria George McEwen Exeter commercial orchards, which is good for the industry. But fighting an urban ACP popula- tion presents unique chal- lenges to the citrus industry in California. The CPDPC has risen to the challenge by funding an urban treatment program conducted by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). The treatment con- sists of a foliar pesticide appli- cation for quick knockdown and a soil drench to provide systemic protection. By the end of October 2011, CDFA had treated 67,863 residential properties, most of James McFarlane Clovis Kevin Olsen Pinedale Etienne Rabe, Ph.D. Delano Earl Rutz, Alternate at Large, Pauma Valley Kevin Severns Orange Cove Brian Specht Thermal which are located in the Los Angeles basin. Prior to treating a residential area, the CDFA notifies own- ers of residential properties within the treatment area and those in a buffer zone around this area. The homeowners are invited to attend a public meeting to obtain information about the pest, the pesticides to be used and what to ex- pect during and after the pes- ticide application. This public outreach , in conjunction with outreach conducted by the CRB, seems to have been quite successful, as very few residents have refused treat- ment of their citrus trees. MON MINN NOON, Trapping ACP in Commercial Groves "Over 8,000 traps are in place in commercial citrus." Detection of Asian Citrus Psyllid in com- mercial citrus groves is funded by the CPDPC through a grant to the Citrus Research Board. Since psyllids are known to attack the edges of groves first, yellow sticky panel traps are placed along grove perimeters at approximately every one- half mile. Within the quarantine area these traps are placed every one-quarter mile. Visual surveys are also conducted by technicians placing the traps. Over 8,000 traps are in place in the 300,000 plus acres of commercial citrus in California, from the California- Mexico border to north of Sacra- mento. Traps are checked and replaced every two weeks. Because the psyllid is so small, any traps with suspect psyllids are examined a second time at either the CRB Riverside laboratory or the CRB Visalia facility, before being sent to CDFA for confirmation. Technicians also visually inspect trees for symptoms of Huanglongbing at sites where they have placed their traps. Any suspicious foliage is collected and NOON We submitted to the CRB Riverside labora- tory for analysis. While very few psyllids have been found in commercial citrus (and no HLB found to date), it is critical to detect the psyllid in the earliest stages of infestation so that control and eradi- cation efforts will be effective. The CPDPC thanks growers for their cooperation in allowing access to their zoves. The DNA extracts are then subjected to quantitative polymerase chain reaction (Q-PCR) analysis to deter- mine if the sample contains the DNA of the Candidotis Liberibac-ter species known to be associated with Huang- longbing disease. Insect or plant genes are also targeted for amplification to verify the quantity and quality of the extract. Although the laboratory is equipped to conduct all the necessary secondary analyses required to confirm a positive finding, any positive results would be further confirmed by the USDA-APHIS CPHST laboratory in Beltsville, MD. Realizing the pivotal role of homeowners, a public out- reach plan was designed to create an environment of support for taking action against the threat. Right now, the war is being fought in backyards in Southern California — particularly in the Los Angeles basin and out to Riverside and San Bernardino counties. As such, the outreach strategy is twofold: 1) implement broad-reaching communications tactics designed to blanket the state and 2) combine these tactics with hyper-local activity in the areas where the psyllid has been found or where risk is high. Among the activities that have proved successful are: Media Relations — Working with print, radio and television, the industry has elicited the support of media to spread the message about the Asian citrus psyllid. News stories emphasized what homeowners can do to protect their backyard citrus, thereby helping to stop the spread of the psyllid to the state's major citrus producing regions. Legislative Outreach — Since homeowner support of the residential trapping and treatment programs is CYFLUTHRIN as a treatment for the Asian Citrus Psyllid Questions and Answers What is Cyfluthrin? Cyfluthrin (Trade name: Tempo@) is a synthetic pyrethroid pesticide. It is used indoors and outdoors for household control of common pests such as 'ants, cockroaches and fleas. It is used on farms for the control of psyllids, aphids and mites on various crops, including fruits, vegetables and grains. How does Cyfluthrin work? For insects, cyfluthrin is both a contact and stomach poison. Contact with or ingestion of cyfluthrin disrupts the normal function of the insect's central nervous system. Insects die when their nervous system is no longer able to maintain essential functions such as feeding. What kinds of tests have been done with Cyfluthrin? The U.S , Environmental Protection Agency and the California Department of Pesticide Regulation have both registered products containing cyflirthrin. All required testing for these registrations has been completed, including toxicity tests for acute (Short term) and chronic (long term) administration. No evidence of carcinogenicity was found after lifetime exposure studies. No effects on reproductive functions or developmental effects in offspring were found during exposure studies. Cyfluthrin is readily metabolized and excreted in mammals after it is administered. It does not store or build up in body tissues. The acute mammalian toxicity of cyfluthrin is considered slight to moderate via the oral, dermal and inhalation routes of exposure. Some animals that were fed high levels of cyfluthrin showed some motor dysfunction characteristic of pyrethroids. What effect can Cyfluthrin have on people? When plants are treated with cyfluthrin, a highly diluted form is used that minimizes the risk of exposure. Cyfluthrin poisoning in people is not common. Accidental or deliberate exposure to large amounts of concentrated cyfluthrin can be fatal; however, crews dilute and mix the product prior to arriving at the treatment site Cyfluthrin can cause skin and eye irritation. Exposure symptoms can include tremors, tingling skin sensations (especially facial), weakness, and lack of muscular coordination. Allergic reactions are not known to occur with cyfluthrin exposure. No lasting effects are reported in individuals who have recovered after serious poisoning. What effects might Cyfluthrin have on other animals or the environment? Cyfluthrin has low persistence in both water and soil and decomposes rapidly in the environment. Cyfluthrin binds easily to soil and is not susceptible to leaching into ground water or movement off site from water runoff When applied to plant foliage, cyfluthrin adheres to plant surfaces, but is generally not absorbed into plants. Aquatic invertebrates and fish are very susceptible to cyfluthrin, so crews take special care to prevent direct or indirect contamination of surface waters. Cyfluthrin is relatively non-toxic to birds. Non-target insect populations can be adversely affected, including honeybees. Treatments for the Asian citrus psyllid are applied to citrus trees exclusively. Bees on a particular citrus tree at the time of treatment may be killed, but impacts on the overall local bee population are expected to be minimal. Crews are instructed to treat citrus trees when they are not in bloom, further reducing impact to pollinators. Non-target insect populations generally recover to pre-treatment levels once the target population is eliminated and eradication treatments cease. Why use Cyfluthrin? Cyfluthrin is part of an overall treatment strategy to control or eradicate the Asian Citrus Psyllid in California. Cyfluthrin is a fast-acting control measure combined with a soil-applied residual systemic insecticide, Merit 2F (Imidacloprid), to provide a long-term comprehensive effective treatment. Imidacloprid (Trade name: Merit()) is a chloro-nicotintyl compound, chemically related to nicotine. It is especially useful against insect pests such as psyllids, leafhoppers, aphids, and thrips that use their mouth to penetrate plant surfaces and draw out nutrients. Imidacloprid (Advantage®) is used as a flea treatment for dogs and cats. It is also used for the control of commonsoil and turf pests such as ants, termites, and grubs. In fanning, it is used on crops including rice, cereal grains, corn, potatoes, some fruits and vegetables, cotton and hops. How does Imidacloprid work? hi treatments for the Asian citrus psyllid, imidacloprid is applied to the soil and taken up by plants through their root system, i.e., systemically. Insects that feed by tapping into a plant's water-conducting tissues and drawing up nutrients also take in imidacloprid. Once taken up by an insect, imidacloprid interferes with nerve transmission in certain types of neurons (nerve rconducting systems). This interference results in the insect's death. Insects are more susceptible to this action than are mammals To a lesser extent, imidacloprid may also be absorbed by insects from surface contact. What kinds of tests have been done with Imidacloprid? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Department of Pesticide Regulation have both registered products containing imidacloprid. All required testing for these registrations has been done, including tests foracute (short term) and chronic (long term) administration. No evidence of carcinogenicity was found after lifetime exposure studies. Imidacloprid is readily metabolized and excreted after it is absorbed. It does not store or build up in body tissues. The acute mammalian toxicity of imidacloprid is considered moderate via the oral route of exposure, but minimally twdc via the dermal and inhalation routes of exposure. Eviderice reported for reproductive and developmental effects in offspring does not indicate a hazard exists for humans from imidacloprid. What effect can Imidacloprid have on people? No reported cases of human poisoning with imidacloprid were found in the literature. Toxicologists suggest that, based on its mechanism of action, poisoning could cause muscle weakness, cramps, and fatigue. Crews treating for the Asian citrus psyllid use ,a Welly diluted form of the product that is not expected to cause such reactions. What effects might imidacloprid have on other animals or the environment? Imidacloprid has moderate persistence in both water and soil. Imidacloprid has an affinity to bind to soil and is generally not a high risk for contamination of ground water or movement off site from water runoff. If imidacloprid is applied to plant foliage, foraging bees can be killed. However, when it is applied to soil as in treatments for the Asian citrus psyllid, bees are less affected because they do not draw nutrients from within treated plants. Birds could be poisoned by the concentrated product, but that would require doses much higher than what is available from residues remaining after application of the diluted product for insects. Imidacloprid is toxic to aquatic invertebrates; however, toxicity to fish is low. Crews take special precautions to avoid treating ponds, creeks and other bodies of water. Non-target insect populations generally recover to pre- treatment levels once the target population is eliminated and eradication treatments cease. Why use Imidacloprid? Imidacloprid is part of an overall treatment strategy to eradicate or control the Asian Citrus Psyllid in California. Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program Overview: The Asian citrus psyllid, which has been found throughout Southern California, can carry one of the most devastating citrus diseases in the world - Huanglongbing (HLB), also known as citrus greening disease. Once a citrus tree becomes infected with HLB, there is no cure and the tree will die. While this tiny insect and HLB are not harmful to humans or pets, HLB is a death sentence for backyard citrus and our state's $2 billion citrus industry. California has found both the Asian citrus psyllid and HLB. The best way to protect against HLB is to control the spread of the pest. The economic consequences resulting from the Asian citrus psyllid and HLB are staggering. For example, HLB has infected 40-60 percent of all citrus trees in certain areas of Florida. As a result, Florida's citrus industry is losing approximately $300 million annually. The Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program is determined to prevent Florida's citrus epidemic from happening in California. As such, the Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program wants to ensure government officials are informed about the issue and are prepared to answer questions from residents and/or direct them to accurate sources of information. The best source for immediate information is www.californiacitrusthreat.org . itrus Industry and Government Action California's citrus industry has been working closely with federal, state and local officials to detect, quarantine and suppress the spread of the Asian citrus psyllid and HLB. * In 2009, AB 281 (De Leon) established the Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Committee (CPDPC), an industry-funded program to assist in combating citrus-specific diseases, vectors and pests, when found in California. • At the December 2011 meeting of the CPDPC, members of the body adopted a plan that establishes an aggressive buffer detection and treatment program around the Asian citrus psyllid population in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. The goals of this plan are to prevent natural HLB spread from northern Mexico via the psyllid and to prevent psyllid spread into commercial citrus producing regions in our state. • A major public outreach campaign involving state and federal entities and the citrus industry is taking place throughout quarantined areas in California. Citizens are being asked to inspect their citrus trees monthly and if the Asian citrus psyllid is found, to contact the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) hotline at 1-800-491-1899. Quarantines remain in effect in all counties where the Asian citrus psyllid has been discovered — thus mitigation steps are being employed continuously in these areas by producers and county officials in partnership with state and federal entities. CDFA is placing traps around Southern California in residential areas to detect and react to the spread of the Asian citrus psyllid and HLB. Should a psyllid be found in a residential tree within high-priority areas, CDFA will treat the tree and surrounding areas. The citrus industry, USDA and CDFA are working together to suppress the spread of the psyllid and will continue efforts to save California's $2 billion citrus industry and 14,000 jobs. ...at Cities and Counties Can Do About the Spread of the Asian Citrus Psyllid and HLB Add the Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program link to your website: — English - www.californiacitrusthreat.org — Spanish - http://peligrancitricosencalifornia.com/ • Provide Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program education materials at city hall and other locations where residents can access information, such as farmer's markets. • Send out Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program Asian citrus psyllid information to email distribution lists and include in newsletters. • Stay informed — have your city follow the Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program on Facebook and Twitter and share important updates provided by the Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program. — Twitter: http://twitter.com/citrusthreat — Facebook: http://facebook.com/californiac - itrusthreat • Run the Asian citrus psyllid awareness Public Service Announcement (PSA) on your city or county television network. Inspect for the psyllid and HLB symptoms monthly and if found, act fast! Citizens should immediately contact the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) hotline at 1-800-491-1899. Agriculture inspectors will then visit the find site to confirm. What insecticides are used when the psyllid is found? Cyfluthrin (trade name Tempo) and Imidacloprid (trade name Merit) are commonly used insecticides by CDFA to protect citrus orchards from insect pests. Are these insecticides harmful to people or pets? No. Insecticides used to treat the Asian citrus psyllid are applied safely, and have been evaluated for safety by the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. In addition, Tempo and Merit are used at flea products, further exemplify- ing that they are non-toxic to cats and dogs. Birds are also not harmed by these products, when applied safely. Can the citrus fruit that is treated with these insecticides be eaten? Yes. Fruit is edible immediately after treatment. It is always wise to wash produce and hands prior to eating, whether it's bought at the local store or picked from the backyard. Agency: Dreaded Citrus Disease Detected in Calif. - ABC News http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/ageney-dreaded-citrus-dis... Agency: Dreaded Citrus Disease Detected in Calif. By TRACIE CONE FRESNO, Calif. go.com Agency: Citrus disease that killed millions of trees across Fla., Brazil detected in Calif. A citrus disease that has killed millions of citrus trees and cost growers billions of dollars across Florida and Brazil has been detected in California, despite the industry's best efforts to keep it at bay. After a week of testing the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed at noon Friday that citrus greening was detected in a lemon-grapefruit hybrid tree in a residential neighborhood of Los Angeles County. Sales and shipments of citrus trees within a 5-mile radius of the tree were due to be suspended Saturday. The disease stands to threaten not only California's nearly $2 billion citrus industry, but treasured backyard trees scattered throughout the state. "Huanlongbing is called the world's worst disease of citrus," said Dr. Robert Leavitt of the California Department of Food and Agriculture. "It had been present until now in all of the world's major citrus producing areas — except California." The bacterial disease, also known as huanglongbing, is carried by the Asian citrus psyllid and attacks a tree's vascular system, producing bitter fruit and eventually killing the tree. Sap-sucking pysllids that feed on an infected tree become carriers of the disease. It is not a threat to humans. "It's disappointing," said Joel Nelson of California Citrus Mutual. "Now we'll see if this great program that we believe we have in place is going to work." State officials were working on a larger quarantine that would extend into northern Orange County. The closest commercial grove is 14 miles away from the infected tree. Detection of the disease has been state citrus growers' fear since the bug first crossed into San Diego County from Mexico in 2008, potentially threatening California's fresh citrus market. Despite 25 years of worldwide research, there still are no biological or genetic controls for the disease that keeps fruit from ripening. The disease is present in Mexico and across the southern U.S., but nowhere is the problem more severe than in Florida, where the disease first appeared in 2005. The University of Florida estimates it has cost 6,600 jobs, $1.3 billion in lost revenue to growers and $3.6 billion in lost economic activity. The pest and the disease also are present in Texas, Louisiana, Georgia and South Carolina. The states of Arizona, Mississippi and Alabama have detected the pest but not the disease. California growers and state agricultural officials have been aggressively trapping and testing bugs 1 of 2 4/3/12 8:46 AM Agency: Dreaded Citrus Disease Detected in Calif. - ABC News http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/ageney-dreaded-citrus-dis.. for the disease since the first sighting four years ago. "This is the other shoe dropping," said Ted Batkin of the California Citrus Research Board. "We're prepared, and now we'll put our game face on." The industry group will ramp up trapping efforts and increase testing samples in an effort to keep the disease from crossing into the San Joaquin Valley, where 80 percent of the state's citrus grows. California growers have been contributing $15 million a year to fund efforts to fight both the psyllids and the disease on top of state and federal programs to fight its spread. "We've been fortunate that we have been able to learn from the experiences of other citrus-growing areas of the world," Leavitt said. "They didn't know they had the psyllid or the disease until it was too late. We have learned from their scientists and have taken a proactive approach." State officials are making arrangements to remove and dispose of the Los Angeles County tree, which so far is the only one found to be infected. They also will spray all citrus trees for psyllids within a half-mile of the infected tree. Testing on tissue samples from other trees within the half-mile radius is ongoing. State officials are unsure why Los Angeles County has a higher rate of psyllid infestations than areas closer to the Mexican border. But officials are investigating whether the bugs are hitchhiking through airports and seaports. 2 of 2 4/3/12 8:46 AM www.CaliforniaCitrusThreat.org That's what is at stake if the Asian citrus psyllid and the disease it carries establishes here. NEWS ALERT! ! ! As of 3/30/12, dreaded HLB disease found in California backyard citrus tree! • Remind everyone that it is illegal to bring citrus trees or cuttings into California from other states or countries because they can carry the insect or be infected with HLB. • If you live in a quarantine area, help prevent the spread of psyllids to other areas: • Don't move plants out of the quarantined area that may harbor the psyllid. • Dry out plant clippings for two weeks before putting them in green waste recycle bins or double-bag clippings. • If you suspect your tree has the psyllid or disease, act fast! Call your County Agricultural Commissioner or the CDFA hotline at 800-491-1899. The Dangerous Pest: Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP) • A small insect, about the size of an aphid. • Feeds on leaves and stems of citrus and close relatives of citrus. • Eggs are laid on young "flush growth" of citrus, where small yellowish orange nymphs (larvae) feed and develop. • The psyllid is a carrier of the deadly plant disease, Huanglongbing. • This insect has spread from Mexico into southern California. Limiting the spread of the psyllid will limit the spread of the disease. The Disease: Huanglongbing (HLB) • Is also called greening disease and yellow shoot disease. • Causes irregular yellowing of leaves. • Produces bitter, inedible, deformed fruit. • Kills citrus trees. • Has not yet been found in California, but it is infecting citrus in nearby states and in Mexico. The Solution: We All Play a Critical Role • Be prepared - learn to recognize the pest and disease and teach others what you know. • Inspect your citrus trees each month. • Be sure to plant only California-grown certified trees that are known to be free of disease.
