In a subdivision called Paradise Lakes Estates, you'd imagine the ski lake homes would be pretty opulent — but
this pad's lavish features are completely off the charts. But what else would you expect from the dream ski lake
home of a longtime skier and architect? Art Border designed this ski lake home as a weekend getaway where he
and his family could escape the nearby Los Angeles crowds and enjoy a little quality time on the water with their
Ski Nautique. Completed in 2008, the house sits on the shores of a tournament ski lake with stunning views of
the Tehachapi Mountains and access to a private airport. Even better, the four -bedroom, five -bathroom palace
features the latest in sustainable technology — solar power in the house and boat lift, an artificial lawn, motorized
window shades, energy -efficient appliances — so the lucky occupants can live in the lap of luxury without leaving
a massive carbon footprint.
What: A two-story house with four bedrooms, five bathrooms and a five -car garage. The second story features a
covered patio and sun deck linked by a spiral staircase. The boat dock includes a sheltered slip with a raised
observation deck and dive platform. Total living area is 3,352 square feet.
Where: 4608 Emerald Bay Dr., Arvin, CA 93203 (roughly an hour and a half north of Los Angeles)
Who: Architect Art Border, his wife, two children and two
grandchildren
How much: $1,7 million
They said: "With the birth of my first two grandchildren, I've experienced the blessing of seeing my family's
favorite hobby span to its third generation at our new lake house- The home is the perfect oasis, where both
young and old can get away from the urban grind and share a little paradise." —Art Border

OMPANIES FROM AROUND RIVERSIDE COUNTY that want to grow their businesses by exporting
products abroad would do well to keep Brazil on their radar, according to a top Brazilian government official who
spoke recently at an event in Riverside designed to assist women- and minority -owned businesses.
Ambassador Jose Alfredo Graca
Lima, Consul General of Brazil in Los
Angeles, noted how his country has
become "a cornerstone of South American
growth and stability." A recent visit to
Brazil by President Obama "heralded a
new phase of the Brazil-U.S. relationship,"
he said.
"The U.S. private sector is increasingly
bullish about doing business in Brazil,"
Graca Lima said. "We are just beginning to
tap into the possibilities that are so
important for Brazil and the U.S"
Graca Lima noted how Brazil's natural
and agricultural resources —the country
leads the world in the production of beef,
sugar cane and coffee, and is second only
to the U.S. in the production of soybeans —
have helped create the eighth -largest
economy in the world. Such resources
helped Brazil largely avoid the economic
recession of 2008.
"Our GDP per capita is now twice as
high as it was 10 years ago, and the poverty
rate has been reduced by almost half,"
Graca Lima said.
Graca Lima spoke at the 2011 Inland
Empire Multicultural Bizfest held at the
Riverside County Administrative Center.
The Bizfest was presented by the Riverside
County Black Chamber of Commerce,
Greater Riverside Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce and the Inland Empire Asian
Business Association.
The Bizfest event was one of several
designed to help Riverside County
businesses increase their exports to other
countries. One of the highlights of Bizfest
was the presentation of exports awards to
several businesses, including:
• Amazon Environmental,
in Riverside
• Combustion Associates, Inc.,
in Corona
• FusionExcel International,
in Montclair
• TC International, in Corona
• Trinity Management Consulting,

Riverside County has made
international trade a priority because the
more goods that are made in Riverside
County and sold across the globe, the
more local jobs are available for Riverside
County residents.
That effort stands to benefit all
companies in Riverside County, and it
must include businesses owned by women
and minorities, said Tom Freeman,
Commissioner of the county's Office of
Foreign Trade.
"We are very fortunate to have a
county that has devoted a lot of time and
effort to doing just that;' Freeman said.
"Trade is a true opportunity. We look
around the world for opportunities we can
bring to you."
In fact, Riverside County offers more
foreign trade zones than any other county
and more EB-5 visa centers than 49 states.
The county also has forged a partnership
with the Export -Import Bank of the
United States and works closely with
ambassadors, consuls general, trade
commissioners and high-ranking officials
in other countries.
"We have done these things and many
more to enhance business development
opportunities for you and your fellow
business owners," Supervisor Bob Buster
told the assembled business owners.
"Many companies have had a very difficult
time with their domestic sales and have
found that selling products and services
in other countries is the place to grow
your business:'
Foreign trade and foreign direct
investment in local companies are
mainstays of the U.S. economy, Buster
said. These resources are especially helpful
during difficult economic times stateside.
"We need more jobs, and we need to
keep the ones we have;' Buster said, "All
eyes are on Brazil. Our interaction with
Brazil will be an important part of how we
interact with the Americas and the rest of
the world."
Hector V. Barreto, President of the
Board of Directors of The Latino
Coalition, urged business owners to
advocate for more trade agreements
between the U.S. and other countries.
"The environment for business right
now is really tough," said Barreto, who
previously served as Administrator of the
U.S. Small Business Administration in
Washington, D.C.
"Government can create an
environment in which jobs can be created."
But trade agreements with Colombia,
Panama and South Korea have been
"studied to death" and still are languishing,
Barreto said.
The emphasis on foreign trade struck
a chord with Christy Lancaster,
President/CEO of the Riverside County
Black Chamber of Commerce.
"There is a huge opportunity there
that is largely untapped;' Lancaster said.
"It's very important that we help folks
get the resources they need to explore
those markets:' •

ARBOR GUARD BOATS, A CORONA COMPANY that makes specialized watercraft for public
safety agencies, built its reputation in the industry by shipping products to fire departments and
other first responders around the U.S.

But in recent years, the company has
begun branching out into the international
market, selling its unique line of watercraft
around the world while strengthening its
base of operations in Riverside County.
"Our market now is anywhere where
there is water;" said company President
Daniel Medina. "We are really hitting
everything now."
Harbor Guard Boats was one of more
than a dozen companies that participated
in a recent event designed to draw
attention to the opportunities Riverside
County businesses have in marketing their
products to overseas buyers.
The event brought boats, recreational
vehicles, spas, public safety equipment and
many more products to the steps of the
Riverside County Administrative Center.
Most importantly, it brought more
recognition to the promise of foreign
trade.
"We really wanted to showcase not
just the important work being done abroad
by our existing businesses in Riverside
County, but also the opportunity for other
companies to get involved," said Tom
Freeman, Commissioner of the County's
Office of Foreign Trade. "The more local
products we sell overseas, the greater the
demand for those products and the more
jobs we will create and maintain locally."
Exporting already is having a
significant effect on the Riverside County
economy. For example, according to the
Brookings Institution, Riverside County
ranks 23rd among the nation's top 100
metropolitan areas for exports, with $11.5
billion annually in exports, or about 8.7
percent of the region's economy.
Other findings from the Washington,
D.C. think tank include:
• With 87,000 jobs directly related
to exporting, Riverside County
ranks 24th in the nation.
• The county's annual growth rate of
export, 11.5 percent, is 26th in the
country.
• Riverside County exporters pay an
average wage of $57,263,
compared to the national average
of $45,563, putting the county
66th in the nation in annual wages
for such workers.

"The more local products we sell overseas, the greater the demand for those
products and the more jobs we will create and maintain locally."
—Tom Freeman, Riverside County EDA Office of Foreign Trade
Riverside County features 8 export
clusters: transportation equipment
manufacturing, tourism, chemical
manufacturing, business,
professional, technical services,
medical equipment and sporting
goods.
• In terms of exports as a share of
Gross Metropolitan Product, the
county is 74th in the nation.
Riverside County businesses already
have strong footholds in Japan, Canada,
Germany, France, Spain, England and
many other countries. Riverside County
has a bilateral trade agreement with
Croatia and is constantly working to get
Riverside County businesses in front of
cities around the county to spread the
word about insurance and funding
opportunities.
"These are tools that we have in our
tool chest to encourage foreign trade in
Riverside County," Field said. "This is all
part of telling our story."
Harbor Guard, which now sells its
products in Turkey, Dubai and Saudi
Arabia, first went international in 2007
after an interested buyer in Turkey found
the company on the Internet. The
company, which moved to Corona from
Costa Mesa about 18 months ago, intends
to expand further around the globe.
"We don't shy away from shipping

more international customers.
MVP RV in Riverside, for example,
has a $310 million agreement to build and
export 30,000 recreational vehicles to
China. The company also plans to develop
an all -electric RV.
"They are creating an RV market in
China, and we are providing jobs here,"
said Robert Field, Assistant County
Executive Office for the Riverside County
Economic Development Agency. "When
people buy RVs in China, they will be
made here."
The county has a Foreign Trade Zone
that includes nearly every city in western
Riverside County, and there are efforts
underway to expand a zone in the desert,
Field said. The agency is working with
U.S. government;' Medina said. "We're
looking at where we can take our product
and help departments do their jobs better."
One of the keys to getting involved in
international trade is a willingness to try,
said Steve Norris, director of sales and
marketing for CARR, a Temecula
company that manufactures after -market
accessories for trucks, sport utility vehicles
and other off -road vehicles. Their products
include steps, running boards, light bars
and other products that improve
performance.
"With Tom Freeman and his group,
we are getting leads all the time;" Norris
said.
CARR is a third -generation, family -
owned company that has been in business
for 66 years, but it only began exporting
internationally a couple of years ago,
Norris said. The company made the move
at the urging of major distributors and
now sells its products in Canada,
Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Saudi
Arabia and Kuwait.
"We used existing U.S. distributors to
get us out of the U.S.," Norris said. "My
focus now is China and the European
market."
Norris said some businesses have been
reluctant to market themselves overseas
because of the ill-founded belief that they
likely will be undercut by goods
manufactured in China or Mexico. Not so,
he said.
"I hear that every day, but we are a
high -end manufacturer, and there is
always a market for high -quality products,"
Norris said. "There is often an opportunity
to export your product with only a
minimum amount of tweaking to your
product or your packaging. There are
differences in each country, but they
usually are pretty simple differences. It's
not that hard to figure it out."
