orientation, physical or mental ability, age or religion can justify withholding a steady basic respect for individual human dignity. We must live this principle of courtesy toward everyone, not-only in our-personal dealings but also in all our civic, official and governmental roles and interactions. It is particularly important where it is most difficult—that is, in the institutional arenas where society defines, regulates and polices its members. To the degree that our key institutions fail in civility, we fail to be fully civilized. It is in light of this principle that the Human Relations Council works to foster dignified human relations and a public culture of civility. I I TO OVIIIIIIISS/ON: IDINOTE COOPENATIODI AND POSITIVE HIIIII IVELATIONS IN TEE COIIIIIINITT - • 1 Philosophy Since it's inception in 1998, the Human Relations Council has engaged in a range of activities designed to nurture harmonious relations among the increasingly diverse elements of our community, and to contribute to a peaceful process of local change and growth. The Council works to advocate, educative, advise and create cooperative networks of like-minded groups and government agencies, all in the service of justice and equity for all members of our community. All of the Council's practical goals and activities are grounded in one key principle: that every human being should be treated with equal courtesy and civility. We believe that no difference, whether of race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, sexual The Human Relations Council accomplishes this by providing: • Information and support to organizations and individuals. • Cooperation with like-minded groups and government agencies. • Promotion of equal access to opportunities and better knowledge about difference • Help, advice and referrals to victims of discrimination or hate violence.
