As your liaison from the Estudillo Mansion Committee I would like to report on how well San Jacinto's Mansion has grown and continues to grow. By May of this year the volunteers had hosted more than 72 tours of the Mansion during February, March and through October when eighty eight second graders from San Jacinto Elementary toured both the Mansion and the Museum had received rave reviews! The Mansion now has a total of 9 working volunteers. A dining table has been added to our donations and several other pieces of furniture have been added. The Mansion is beginning to reflect the elegant lifestyle of its original occupants. Since Bill Bryant has taken over the supervision of the grounds, trees have been trimmed and the new Bermuda lawn is lush and green. The newly planted olive trees have taken hold and are flourishing. A fitting link between this Mansion and her Soboba sister. The cottonwoods have been moved to line the fence along the 7ch Street side of the property. And the grounds have taken on a well manicured appearance We still have structural problems with the Carriage House to address before it can be considered safe. At that time the recent gift of a carriage could be displayed, but for now, it is kept in safe storage away from the property. In addition, visitors to the Museum are also increasing, with attendance logging in at well over 100 visitors a month. A special vote of thanks goes to San Jacinto Eagle Scout Cody Young who made the museum his project and completely washed down the outside of the building and painted it, providing all the materials himself. The Mansion will again be lighted and decorated for Christmas this year. We owe our thanks to the R.O.T.C. who had donated their time and talents to help maintain the Mansion. They have been tireless workers. Our Mansion has risen from the once deteriorating building it was when this project was first started to a proud beauty -- one that this Valley can be justly proud of. The historic finding occurred in Riverside County near where SCE is constructing the new El Casco Substation. SCE staff and contract paleontologists and biologists carefully monitored construction grading at the 28-acre site. Because of soft sediments in the soil, SCE expected to find some fossils, but nobody expected anything close to the size and scope of fossils discovered. The fossil collection contains specimens that date back an estimated 1.4 million years to a period known as the Irvingtonian North American Land Mammal Age. The El Casco collection contains an estimated 1,450 specimens. More than 27 different kinds of fossils have been identi- fied. Some of the discoveries are extremely rare. Some are notable for their relative completeness. Among those are a small, saber-toothed cat, the Smilodon Gracilis, which is a million years older than its descendent, the large sa- ber-toothed cat found at the La Brea Tar Pits. Among the larger pieces in the collection are animal fossils from two ground sloths, at least two types of camels, a llama, a horse, a deer and two cats. SCE is working with the Western Science Center in Hemet where the collection will be permanently housed for public viewing and study. Fossils discovered at the El Casio site are being cleaned and displayed at the Riverside lab of LSA Associates, an SCE con- tractor Additional Customer Assistance Programs Medical Baseline Discount Rate: Provides additional baseline energy allowance to customers using electrically-powered medical equipment or with specific medical conditions. (800) 684-8123 Energy Assistance Fund (EAF): Provides customers facing disconnection with up to $100 per year to pay an electric bill. The program is funded by donations from SCE employees, customers and SCE's parent company, Edison International. The grants are administered by assistance agencies. (800) 205-8596 Call 211 for Community Service Programs: Provides callers with information and referrals to community services throughout California for every day needs and crisis support. That's why Edison is focusing on strategies to aid customers. Approximately 480,000 households, representing 12 percent of all SCE customers, are considered to be in economic distress, or not currently able to pay all bills on time. Many of these households, especially those experiencing financial difficulties for the first time, might not know that they can get immediate help with their electric bill. Many are late on their bills, and some leave bills unpaid until shut-off is imminent. A service disconnection is the last resort for SCE when it does not hear back from a cus- tomer. In addition to customers who are behind on their electric bills, other customers may qualify for the following economic assis- tance programs. • The Energy Management Assistance program (EMA) provides free energy-saving appliances to help customers lower their energy usage and ultimately their bills. (800) 736- 4777 • The California Alternate Rates for Energy program (CARE) provides income-qualified families a discount of 20 percent or more off their electric bill. (800) 447-6620 • The Family Electric Rate Assistance program (FERA) also provides customers a discount on their electric bill, but has different income guidelines and discount rates than CARE. (800) 447-6620 The Campaign is using a variety of outreach tactics, including direct-to-customer communications in seven languages, cus- tomer events, public relations outreach and outbound Interactive Voice Response calls. SCE Unveils `Plug-in Car Rate Assistant' Southern California Edison has launched a new online Plug-in Car Rate Assistant for customers who are interested in buying a plug-in electric vehicle. This new interactive feature at www.sce.com/pev, among the first for the industry, helps potential buyers select the best elec- tric vehicle rate plan option and estimate the cost of fueling an electric vehicle. The easy-to-use tool prompts users to enter their zip code, daily power usage, gasoline price and charging behaviors, and then delivers an estimated comparison of the av- erage monthly electricity and gasoline bills. "The online car rate assistant will provide an idea of the bill impacts and the benefits of charging electric vehicles during off- peak hours, 9 p.m. to noon," said Steve Powell, SCE's manager of Plug-in Electric Vehicle Readiness.
